The CellScope turns a camaraphone into a microscope

By simply attaching the CellScope you can turn a camera-enabled mobile phone to a microscope. A research team at UC Berkeley is working on building the technology that will allow anyone to diagnose malaria with this special microscope. The CellScope, still in its prototyping phase but the likes of Microsoft and Nokia have shown interest in the project. The makes hope that the mass-manufactured version will for less than $100 and be easily affordable. The CellScope is also being developed to diagnose tuberculosis, said Wilbur Lam, a postdoctoral fellow in bioengineering who is part of the research team. In parts of the developing world where malaria is said to be the leading cause of child mortality, such devices can come handy for speedy diagnosis and dispensing of medication.
