Art Sale Prices Plunge

plunge“The extent of the downturn, from $800 million to a final count of $470 million by Friday night, looked bad. Seven lots estimated to fetch more than $10 million each did not sell, and the total accumulated was the equivalent to the amount fetched in New York two and a half years ago. Nothing can obscure the fact that only 60 per cent of approximately 900 lots were sold, and the vast majority of these sold below their estimates – often by as much as 30 per cent.”

Gemeentemuseum shows Modern & Contemporary Art – XXth Century

gemeentemuseum_uzlanyFor the first time in its history, the Gemeentemuseum presents a vast display of modern and contemporary art filling two whole floors of its main building. The new exhibition, entitled XXth Century, uses both major historical events like the Wall Street Crash and the Russian revolution to suggest the background against which untiring artistic experimentation constantly transformed the face of Western art. Via outstanding works by artists like Mesdag, Toorop, Van Doesburg, Picasso, Constant, Mondrian, Lewitt, Merz, Lüpertz and Baselitz, it reveals a world still inward-looking at the start of the period but increasingly interested in new external developments as time went on. On exhibition through 1 March, 2009.

Louis Vuitton 5th Ave. Store Design by Takashi Murakami

louis-vitton-5thLouis Vuitton always manages to surprise us by taking whatever they do to the next level. For their flagship store on 5th avenue in New York, Louis Vuitton covers the facade of the building with Takashi Murakami’s signature multi-colored monogram print. The result is a stunning branded landmark that no one can miss. Furthermore, this store features a “bag bar” that is often seen at LV stores around the world but with moving parts. If you’re in New York, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Surfline Powers Oakley’s Free Surf Report App for iPhone, iPod Touch

surflineOakley and Surfline announced their free app: Surf Report.

There’s only one other surf-forecasting app, GreenRoom Surf Forecasts, available today and it costs $2.99. It’s limited to spots in California, but you can get a seven-day forecast whereas Surf Report only provides up to three days. However, Oakley’s app is free and you can’t beat that.

With Surfline powering the Oakley app, surfers now have access to spots all over the world with vital stats like air temp, water temp, tide charts, swell breakdown, wind, sunrise/sunset and a brief synopsis for each spot. Projected conditions and weather are provided for the following three days as well. Using the GPS coordinates of your iPhone you can see what’s going on at a handful of spots near you that are within a certain distance that you set.

Driving directions are also included via map links in case you’re going somewhere new. All of the beaches are well known, so the few hidden spots that are left in the world won’t be revealed, but this will surely bring on another wave of iPhone toting kooks to the already crowded lineups.

A community tab launches news surrounding Oakley team riders, profiles, photos and videos for those interested.
