Realtime Realtime video Goggles Put R/C Plane Pilots In The Cockpitideo goggles put R/C plane pilots in the cockpit

Radio-controlled planes are all about vicariously experiencing the freedom of flight – and with this little device, you move one step closer to feeling like it’s you up there soaring between the trees. Pilot View’s FPV 2400 is a US$550 add-on that sends video back from the plane in real-time to a set of video goggles so you can fly your plane (or drive your R/C car, or watch your buddy’s hang gliding experience) from a first-person view.

The Pilot View FPV 2400 isn’t the first time a video camera’s been mounted on an R/C plane, but it’s an all-in one kit comprising the mini camera, video goggles, 2.4 GHz transmitters, receivers, power supplies and USB chargers – everything you need to put yourself in the cockpit of your R/C plane as you fly it. Apparently it takes a bit of getting used to, so this is probably not something you trial with your best or most expensive plane.

Of course its use isn’t limited to aeroplanes – the FPV system would also be a great way to experience an R/C car or dune buggy race. Or you could put it on top of a pole and find out what’s under the house or over the fence. Or mount it on the dog’s collar for an authentic Fidocam experience. The Pilot View FPV is available through Hobby Lobby.

Aliph Jawbone2

I am a big fan of the Jawbone since way back in ‘04. It’s hard to imagine how Aliph could improve on an already solid product, but the Jawbone 2 sports a new design, a footprint about half the size of its predecessor, and improved noise-canceling technology.

Differed from the first generation product, the package had been trimmed and made eco-friendly. The ear loop is a leather-wrapped design that not only feels good on the ear, but makes putting on the headset a snap and you get an updated charger and magnetic USB cord.

Beyond that, you can really tell that Aliph took some time to analyze the old version and challenge themselves to make the new one even better. Pairing is enabled the first time the headset is powered up. Standby time has increased to a whopping eight days — though talk time has decreased to four hours from six. But, best of all, the sound quality is as crisp and noiseless as I have come to expect from Jawbone.

The Lost Ones

Zune Arts is an absolute must see for anyone who wants to be on the cutting edge of emerging art. The collaborations they foster between artists are dependably kick ass and always push the envelope.

They continue to break new ground with “epic intergalactic adventure” The Lost Ones, an upcoming graphic novel written by 30 Days of Night comic horror master Steve Niles. In the collaborative spirit, The Lost Ones‘ four chapters will be illustrated by a different graphic artist, giving each section its own style, while also working in tandem to visually bring Niles’ story to life.

Particularly impressive is the diversity of these fantastic four: Dr. Revolt, an original in the legendary NYC graffiti crew The Rolling Thunder Writers; amazing surrealist illustrator Gary Panter; innovative Brooklyn-based art and design studio Morning Breath; and up-and-coming fashion designer/painter Kime Buzzelli. Scheduled for release in June, The Lost Ones will be up for grabs in both paperback and collector’s editions. And grab it we will.

Singapore Airlines Offers Its flyers iPod Docks And 15.4-inch LCDs

Luxury air travel is getting a new face everyday with the new luxurious seating from the luxury airliners. It’s around two years back when Singapore Airlines upgraded their luxury seating with the enhanced first class cabin with the largest seats in the sky, a whopping 35 inches across. This time, they have announced that all of its Business Class Airbus A340-500 flights will now be fitted with iPod docks and 15.4-inch widescreen LCDs. The provision will enable flyers to enjoy their own movies and music via the included noise-proof headphones that will only shut off when there is an announcement from the flight crew. The innovation seems like the natural next step when it comes to luring business oriented flyers away from rivals though we only expect the prestigious airline to do a much spanklier job at it than any of the others in the market.

Now that’s a fun way to fly.

Ron Arad: Misfits

At last Summer’s “Important 20th Century Design” auction at Sotheby’s, Ron Arad‘s beautiful bronze and steel sculptural lounge entitled “After Spring” (produced in 1992) sold for a record-setting $168,000, forever attaching “Design Superstar” to his name.

Continuing to inspire, Arad’s newest seating system, “Misfits” for Moroso, is promising to be one of the most highly anticipated Design Week debuts. The uneven modularity and flowing, organic shapes come together in a beautiful jigsaw puzzle. What is most striking besides the eye-catching shapes are the proportions — oversized to the eye, yet incredibly comfortable to sit. I found the curves to be enveloping and relaxing, with the give of the cushion to be perfect; creating truly functional art that is meant to be enjoyed.

Misfits_02.jpg

The soft curvature of the collection brings to mind Olivier Mourgue’s Djinn Lounge Chairs prominently showcased in Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but Arad is definitely working in a universe all his own.

With the varied array of pieces and shapes, the creations are endless — define your space as you like, whether it be a sinuous L-shaped sectional or a bold punch of color from the curvy topography of the ottoman.

Check out “Misfits” at the Moroso Showroom starting on Saturday, 17 May 2008, where the collection will be formally debuting with an opening reception by invitation only from 7-9pm.
